Is Homework Necessary for Home Schooling

Posted By Ina Woolcott

Homeschooling does not put any kind of pressure on a child, they don’t have to prove their abilities. Also, parents get the opportunity to understand their child better with homeschooling. In itself home schooling does not necessitate homework, as the child is already home schooling. The only requirement is to find out what the childs strenghts and weaknesses are so they can be worked on, and to promote that in which the child is interested in. It is worth designing a curriculum that would add to your child(ren)s productivity and creativity.

Can home schooling be done without homework? Well, in reality there is little point, and it is unnecessary, to give a child homework when home schooling. As time is not an issue with home schooling, and more is learned quicker as learning is one on one, or however many kids are being home schooled, children would not study in a comfortable or relaxed way if there was pressure to do homework. Besides, homework in itself is inherent in homeschooling. They are already learning in the home (and outdoors) so are automatically doing homework. One of the tremendous advantages of teaching at home is that your child(ren) is not learning under any threat, putting on pressure to do homework, or to do it in a better way may confuse the child. In public schools of course, home work is often required. 6 hours of school a day, plus homework. A bit much really!!

Children feel more comfortable learning at home and outdoors without the added pressure of any homework to do. In a public school setting, it may happen that a child is scared about a particular teacher and is unable to express his views or point, which he would otherwise do without any hang-ups at home or in any given friendly environment. The teacher may not have enough time to help the student if they are stuck or don’t understand, meaning the child may loose confidence, when he notices other pupils ’get it quicker’ than they do. Baring this in mind, homeschooling is definitely the better option than going to a public school.

going back to homework it is best to focus on the process of learning rather than expect homework to be a fast, effective output from your child's end. When teaching your child(ren) at home, you must understand what is going in his heart, whilst undertaking a task. It may happen that a child wants to finish a task quickly to get it out of the way, but this may be an expression of their viewpoint on the work being done.

There will be times when you give a project or assignment to do, but don’t pressurise them. Help them out if needed. Do the project together. Children taught at home should grow with a healthy, positive attitude towards life with an in-depth well rounded knowledge, because their studies should not be seen as a burden but enjoyable and fun, together with their families.
