Children as young as eight are carrying knives, a shock report reveals. They arm themselves for the journey to and from school because they fear attacks by other youngsters.
More than 900 potentially lethal weapons have been seized by police from children on school grounds. They include hunting knives, axes, meat hooks, claw hammers, knuckledusters - and even guns.
The disturbing figures came as a survey revealed a third of young people think it is acceptable to carry a knife in self defence.
They say they have lost faith in politicians, the police and their schools and increasingly believe they need to be armed at all times. Almost half said they knew of someone who had been a victim of knife crime.
