Poisonous Sleep, Living in a Toxic World
By Viola Woolcott
The more I research the toxicity issue of mattresses, the more shocked I am to find out about the poisoning of people whilst asleep. Grown ups have known to be strongly affected and could react with a number of symptoms, but what about babies and children? They are far more vulnerable and at risk during the crucial developmental period, as they are exposed far longer, quite often 50-70% of their day.
As well as being absorbed through the skin, the chemicals in the mattresses easily become airborne and that means that they release toxic and poisonous gases into the air. Babies and children are breathing only a few inches away from the surface of the mattress they are sleeping and playing on.
I have no doubt, but a large percentage of our children of any age suffer from chronic, never-ending health problems as well as a great number of development disorders. Immune, respiratory, and nervous system issues are also on the increase. The mental "health" system ads 10 new children a day, (seven days a week) with full syndrome autism to their long list. Studies undeniably point to low-level exposures of toxins as culprits in causing damage to the brains and bodies of children.
We go about our days being unaware of all the toxins surrounding us. These poisons cannot be detected by sight or smell, therefore it seems easy to dismiss the issue and adopt the attitude of “out of sight – out of mind” and some even say “we shouldn’t live our lives in fear”, there is nothing we can do about it, we just happen to live in a toxic world.” Not that I want to spread fear, but AWARENESS EMPOWERS – IGNORANCE ENDANGERS….
Beyond vaccinations (an entirely different can of worms!!), but to me mattresses are one of the biggest, most hazardous, unsafe toxic exposures to most babies and children during their crucial development.
Sadly, as far as mattresses go, there are very few alternatives that are completely and absolutely safe for babies, no matter if they sleep in a cot or even in the parents’ bed. We cannot control everything, but there IS a lot that we can do about the major exposures by looking into and doing what we can to eliminate the most significant exposures. By eliminating the bigger issues we can get on with our lives without worrying about all of the small stuff.
Parents, grandparents, childcare providers, and health professionals must become aware in order to take steps to protect our children and our children’s children.
