How Does Home Schooling Work

By Ina Woolcott

The process of home schooling usually starts before a child even reaches the age when they are ready to start school.

A lot of children can already count, name colours, animals or even recite the alphabet and other more complicated things before this time. This is due to the fact that a dedicated hard working parent has taken the time to teach their child these things. From here, home schooling is a natural progression. A home curriculum is developed to best suit the child's needs. It sounds simple but is a big decision and responsibility. It may be a good idea to have a chat with parents who have, or are, home schooling their children to get ideas and tips. You must be clear in your mind about what you are going to undertake.

There will also be some expenses incurred and one parent may have to give up work or do some part time work instead. A good alternative is to work from home.

There are various methods of home schooling and I think you should consider carefully which one is best for you and your child in advance. The home must be prepared to accommodate home education.

It is a full commitment to home school, be prepared for possible negative comments from family or friends with regards to home schooling. At times this may be discouraging and make you question if what you are doing is right. Be strong and remain positive. Some people wrongly believe that a public school is the only place an education can be received.

You will need to be patient and realise that things may not always go as planned. If your child has difficulty understanding something you will have to patiently work through it with them. A good thing to have is a sense of humour as at times you will have to keep things fun for both you and your child. It is also a bonus if you have a good relationship with your child as you will be with them 24/7.

Home schooling can be fun and give more freedom, but it is a big responsibility and hard work. The rewards are great though and the good thing is that generally a strong bond of love and mutual respect is forged between parent(s) and child(ren).
